Introducing There is no reason for a moustache by Pola Pulver

This month my actual interview partner cancelled last minute and there was not enough time to find another one. Therefor I will write about There is no reason or a moustache aka Matthieu Séry and Pola Pulver.
A few years ago we decided to spend as much time as possible together and being creative as a team was one of the many ideas how to reach this goal. We agreed to take our selfmade objects and go to markets, hence There is no reason for a moustache was born.
When I asked Matthieu how it got started he said:”It might sound tacky but we just wanted to be ourselves and just do what we do without filters or censorship.” It was and is more a hobby, a luxury that we afford then an actual business idea. Matthieu Séry is a painter, for the markets he did special limited editions of postcards as well as photographs and original drawings, oil on canvas and acrylic on paper. These objects have nothing to do with his work as a painter he says, but:” what I do for the market, I do with the same love and intention.” Also his creations for the market are figurative which is almost non existent in his current work in fact in the past years it has developed more and more towards abstraction. Why he chooses figurative motives for the market, I want to know. “It is easier. I have the feeling, people need the figurative in order to connect with it, to inweave it to their own story.”
Matthieu Séry came 2009 from France for an artist residency to Berlin. The residency was finished after 3 months but he was lucky, as he says himself, met a collector who bought works from him, gave him a place to show, to live and to work. And so he stayed, met Pola and stayed even more.
He does not really miss France, well sometimes a little, he misses to speak his native language and the grumpy people in the streets. Wondering if the city had an influence on his work, Matthieu answers: “Yes and No. When I arrived in Berlin my work was in a transition phase. Probably its development - towards abstraction - would have proceeded anyway. But it is true that Berlin gives you enough room and space, room for introspection.”
And Pola Pulver? She is adding handpainted ceramics to the stand, and is happy when the people come by, look, smile, look at us, smile again and then say: beautiful. This exact scenario has happened more then once. Within this smile lies a lot that may be left unsaid.

Diesen Monat ist mein eigentlicher Interviewpartner kurzfristig abgesprungen und auf die Schnelle konnte kein Ersatz gefunden werden. Deshalb schreibe ich also diesmal über There is no reason for a moustache alias Matthieu Séry und Pola Pulver.
Vor ein paar Jahren entschlossen wir uns, möglichst viel Zeit miteinander zu verbringen und kreativ miteinander zu sein war eine von vielen Ideen, wie wir diesem Ziel näher kommen können. Wir beschlossen mit unseren selbstgemachten Objekten auf Märkte zu gehen und somit war There is no reason for a moustache geboren.
Auf Nachfrage wie der Anfang war sagt Matthieu: „Auch wenn es kitschig klingt, wir wollten einfach so sein, wie wir sind, das tun, was wir tun ohne Filter oder Zensur.“ Es war und ist mehr ein Hobby oder Luxus, den wir uns leisten, keine Geschäftsidee im eigentlichen Sinne. Matthieu Séry ist Maler, für die Märkte hat er spezielle Editionen von limitierten Postkarten angefertigt, ebenso Fotografien und auch Originale in kleinerem Format, Öl auf Leinwand oder Acrylfarbe auf Papier. Mit seinem Werk als Maler haben diese Objekte nichts zu tun, sagt er, „aber was ich für den Markt mache, tue ich mit der gleichen Liebe und Intention.“ Außerdem sind die Werke für den Markt figurativ, was in Matthieus Werken als Maler derzeit beinahe ganz fehlt, vielmehr entwickeln sich seine Arbeiten in den letzten Jahren zunehmend ins Abstrakte. Warum er figurative Motive für den Markt auswähle, frage ich ihn. „Es ist leichter. Ich habe das Gefühl, die Leute brauchen das Figurative, um sich damit zu verbinden, es in ihre eigene Geschichte zu verweben.“
Matthieu Séry kam 2009 aus Frankreich nach Berlin, eigentlich nur für eine Künstler Residenz die nach 3 Monaten beendet war. Er hatte Glück, wie er selbst sagt, traf einen Sammler, der ihm einige Bilder abkaufte und ihm einen Ort gab, um auszustellen, zu leben und zu arbeiten. Und so blieb er, traf Pola und blieb weiter.
Er vermisse Frankreich nicht wirklich, nur manchmal ein wenig, er vermisst es, seine Sprache zu sprechen und grantige Leute auf der Straße.
Ob die Stadt einen Einfluss auf seine Arbeit habe. „Ja und Nein“ antwortet Matthieu, „als ich in Berlin ankam befand sich meine Arbeit in einer Übergangsphase, wahrscheinlich wäre die Entwicklung auch in einer anderen Stadt so verlaufen, mehr und mehr ins Abstrakte, aber es stimmt, dass Berlin einem genug Raum und Zeit gibt, Raum für die Selbstbetrachtung.“
Und Pola Pulver? Die fügt dem Stand handbemalte Keramik zu, freut sich, wenn die Leute vorbeikommen, gucken, lächeln, uns anschauen, wieder lächeln und „schön“ sagen. Dies ist nicht nur einmal vorgekommen. In diesem Lächeln liegt viel, das ungesagt bleiben darf.
